LISTENING TO THOSE AFFECTED BY CANCER

LISTENING TO THOSE AFFECTED BY CANCER

Coming to terms with cancer can be challenging, it often brings new emotions and feelings as well as change. Counselling gives you the space to explore and understand your feelings and emotions in a non judgemental environment. Our Emotional Support Service provides one to one support in order to help you make sense of your individual circumstances and identify and manage your choices when looking to the future.

We understand that a cancer diagnosis impacts not just the patient but those close to them as well. That’s why we offer support and help to both patients and their loved ones for as long as it is needed.

The Fountain Centre’s Emotional Support Service includes: Ward Based Listening Service, One to One Counselling, Coaching and Family Service.

These services are available to cancer patients under the care of a consultant at the RSCH, or cancer patients whose closest hospital is the RSCH as well as relatives and carers of current cancer patients, and RSCH staff working with people diagnosed with cancer.

When an adult in a family has cancer it affects everyone. For children, this can be an isolating and frightening experience. It can bring dramatic changes to their lives and can affect their experience of school, relationships and their ongoing development. Sometimes it is difficult to know what to say, or when and how to say it. We can help you navigate through this difficult time. Our Family Support team will discuss your individual needs with you and arrange whatever support is best for your family. Support may be a one off discussion for advice and guidance, or it might be longer one to one counselling for a family member.

If you feel you would benefit from something more, you may want to try our counselling service. Counselling is a talking therapy that allows you to open up and discuss your concerns and feelings in a confidential and dependable environment. A counsellor is trained to listen and be empathic. They are there so you can talk freely in a safe and non-judgemental environment. The aim of counselling is to enhance your overall wellbeing by helping you to cope with and work through the situation you find yourself in. At the Fountain Centre our counsellors can work with you over a short or longer term time period. All our Counsellors have either completed a BACP/UKCP accredited course or are in supervised training.
